If you are just beginning to fish tournaments, proceed in steps by first fishing local or weekly four-hour tournaments or their equivalent.

Proceed from the smaller tournaments to a more organized tournament trail, either draw or pro-am, with a championship at the end of the season so you can get used to accruing points and fishing more consistently.

However, if you choose to begin fishing tournaments, do not forget to come up with a plan and a set of goals.

When fishing vegetation, or any type of structure, always watch for anything different or irregular.

Remember, always pay close attention to detail with each fish you catch and apply what you learn to catch another. When fishing vegetation, note exactly what type of vegetation, depth, location, point or hole, etc. and find other situations like that to catch other bass.

In regard to spinnerbaits, generally try to match the size of the spinnerbait, especially the blades, to the size of the baitfish.

The three main styles - Colorado, Indiana and willow leaf - each have distinct vibrations and flash.

Spinnerbaits can be very effective from the surface to very deep water to fishing on the extreme bottom.

This question often is asked by individuals who have fished most of the time on one lake and are now faced with traveling to other bodies of water.

Next, after remembering the time of year, type of water (lake, river, etc.) and weather, approach the general location of fish accordingly.

And finally, take the information learned from that small segment of the lake (or river) and, looking at the maps, find other sections with the same characteristics and apply what you learned ...

When fishing soft plastics, how do you decide when to use a crawfish, lizard or a worm pattern? I typically throw a lizard or craw-worms in the springtime when the bass move up into the shallow water. I love to fish with a wacky worm when I'm bed fishing, but I will switch to a lizard or crawfish when flipping shallow brush.

I've fished natural waters my entire life and just moved to an area of the country where the only bodies of water are reservoirs. To try to locate the bass, look for shallow areas in the timber, especially in the fall. Look for fallen timber, too, that provides ambush areas for bass (areas that bass will hold in, waiting for crawfish or baitfish).

When I watch fishing shows on TV, I hear the pros talk about the success they have sight fishing. I try to determine whether the fish are in the pre-spawn, spawning or post-spawning phase. As if you are fishing for pre-spawn bass, position the boat far enough from the fish and make long casts.

By the time I was 16, I realized that I wanted to fish professionally so I began to fish the Red Man Tournament Trail. Then, as you get more comfortable, you can begin fishing the larger, regional tournaments. The Red Man Tournament Trail and the Everstart Series are great circuits to fish because you can begin to hone your fishing skills.

With the different variety and abundance of plant life found in lakes, what do bass prefer? Elodea is more prevalent in the early spring, fall and winter months while lily pads will be most abundant in the spring and summer. To help improve your chances of catching fish, match the depth to the seasonal movement of the bass and fish the grass available at that depth.

My first choice is a 3/8-ounce double willow silver Gambler Pro Series spinnerbait. My second choice is a 4-inch Gambler tube in green pumpkin or a smoke-red color. My third choice is a Yo-Zuri shallow Crank n' Dive crankbait in any of the shad patterns.
