HENDERSON, N.C. — The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Kerr Lake Aug. 28-29 for the fifth and final stop in the Piedmont Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $11,000 and $4,500, respectively.

“Lake Kerr has a good topwater bite that can last all day long,” said FLW Tour pro Brian Travis of Conover, N.C., who is fresh off a 15th-place finish at the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup. “I have always been successful when I have made the long run up to the river using topwater baits such as the Lucky Craft Gunfish or Spooks. You can really do some power-fishing up there.

“If the water level is up, anglers could also have a lot of success fishing shallow in the bushes using a big worm, 7 to 10 inches.”

Travis believes that the water level will be key to winning this tournament. If it is high, the fish will be shallow and anglers will want to fish the bushes of willow trees along the banks; if it is low, the fish will be pushed back into the main-channel pockets, and anglers will want to fish main-channel points. He believes that it will take 15 pounds per day to win the tournament.

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Satterwhite Point Marina located at 6254 Satterwhite Point Road in Henderson, N.C. Takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Kerr Lake BFL tournament is being hosted by the Vance County Department of Tourism.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers that offers even bigger prizes to qualifiers of the regional championship and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
