Gagliardi Up Early, Wilson Surging

14.Aug.2014

The action wasn’t fast and furious, but Anthony Gagliardi lived up to his billing as the local favorite this morning on Lake Murray. He had a limit of 11 or 12 pounds by about 9 a.m. but lost a couple of keepers that could have culled out at least one squeaker in the livewell.

Gagliardi was the talk of the tournament on Twitter early this morning, but his status as the frontrunner might be about to fizzle out. Reports have come in that Birmingham, Ala., pro Barry Wilson has a limit that includes a 6-pound kicker.

At the time this story went live, FLW’s media crew was on its way to Wilson’s boat for an update. Stay tuned for more.

As for the rest of the field, it seems that the morning bite wasn’t as productive as many anglers expected, despite the breezy, cool conditions at takeoff.

Shallow topwater tactics have produced a handful of quality fish thus far. And once the sun got up, some of the shallow starters changed up tactics and headed for deeper haunts to run offshore patterns.

No matter where pros are fishing, the most common strategy midmorning was to run and gun, looking for active biters around wood and grass cover or chasing packs of bass hunting bait.

Check out the Gagliardi video above to see him catch his early limit, then stay tuned to FLWOutdoors.com or follow FLW on Twitter via @FLWFishing for live updates from the water.
