An open letter regarding FLW Outdoors

FLW Outdoors
By Irwin Jacobs -  10.Mar.2010
There has been a great deal of discussion regarding FLW Outdoors and the sport of professional angling and I feel it is important to address the industry and hopefully put to rest any questions, concerns and rumors.

First and foremost, FLW Outdoors has and will continue to do everything possible to grow our organization and the sport. While our decisions may not always be accepted and understood, I can promise you there are many things that are taken into account prior to making them. FLW Outdoors, like most other businesses, has been affected by the downturn in the economy and again, we are doing the best we can to overcome these challenging times and stay healthy for the future. Yes, this has meant cutbacks in areas of our business as well.

We realize that this has had a significant impact on anglers and have done our best to listen and react as best we can. I want to encourage anglers to be aggressive and creative in finding ways to self-promote, whether through websites, social networks or within our television show and magazine whenever possible. Fans need and want individuals to support and follow.

We recognize the importance of this for both the fans as well as the anglers and realize this has been difficult in the past for anglers who are not sponsor-compliant with our current logo rules. Our logo rules have played a very important and valuable role in FLW Outdoors’ history. However, the landscape of our sport has changed quite dramatically and we are in the final stages of reviewing our current logo requirements in order to help the anglers promote themselves more effectively under the FLW Outdoors umbrella.

One thing that I need to set straight once and for all is this idea that “Irwin Jacobs is filling his pockets.” This simply is not true and quite the contrary. In fact, I don’t think it is a secret that I got into the fishing tournament business for the purpose of marketing and promoting the Ranger Boat Company. While this original purpose has changed since the recent purchase of Ranger, Stratos and Champion boats by Platinum Equity, I can promise you that I am as committed to growing FLW Outdoors as I was the day I bought Operation Bass 15 years ago, which ultimately was renamed FLW Outdoors.

The reason for changing our name was to allow FLW Outdoors the freedom to expand into other areas besides bass fishing which is what we have done. We’ve made some significant enhancements to this year’s events as we’ve expanded our reach into the outdoors beyond just fishing.

Our FLW Tour events now include Outdoor Expos offering a wide variety of booths and interactive games for our fans to visit and shop. This also offers anglers a prime opportunity to promote themselves. While fishing is at FLW Outdoors’ core, the outdoors in general brings a whole new level of opportunity and quite frankly, I am more optimistic about our future with this new focus than ever before.

While it is our goal to have all aspects of our business finalized and completed prior to the start of each season, it is not always possible. We are still talking to prospective sponsors and hope to continue announcing new partners as the season continues.

As always, we continue to listen to feedback from anglers, fans and sponsors, and when it makes good business sense, we’re open to making modifications. Having said this, we will be announcing some changes in the near future to better serve the anglers, fans and our sponsors, all of whom make FLW Outdoors possible.

Sincerely,

Irwin L. Jacobs
Chairman
FLW Outdoors

Thank you for the clarification letter. I am responding, to this letter, because I really will miss not participating in the FLW/BFL season this year. I have sent a response to FLW about dropping the Empire Division for this year. Since 2004 I have participated and actually made a Regional in North Carolina. I was very dissappointed that the decision was made to drop this division. I was thinking about the data that showed it was not economically reasonable to continue to have the Empire Division. Can I review this data?? I am from Pennsylvania and love fishing the NEW YORK waters. All of my fishing peers from PA, NJ, CT, and New York have decided to move over to the Bassmasters Weekend Series. This series has a West and East division in New York. From Champlain to Chataqua

ABA will flourish. If ABA can continue to support the Anglers why then can`t FLW? IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CONSIDERATE IF A SURVEY FROM A WEB-SITE LIKE ZOOMERANG could have been sent out to all registerd ,boaters and nonboaters, coolect data to support this decision. I read your letter carefully and hope that new modifications will help bring back the credibility back to FLW. Thanks for listening. Jerry

Mr. Jacobs, Thanks for the reassurance on your part..
I am more worried about the future of Sport Fishing at the Federal Level. Hopefully everyone who reads this will take notice!
Guys, Our passion is in danger of becoming ILLEGAL, due to an Executive Order by President Obama!(I respect the Position)This Coastal Conservation Task Force, he set up after elected, is headed up by ppl. who care nothing about fishing, only saving fish. If they have their way, any waters that connect to waters that eventually hit the ocean, that's right, if a rain drop falls in Michigan and has a chance of getting to the ocean at the gulf, ALL THOSE WATERS WILL BE UNFISHABLE! Along with coastal waters..OH yeah! They want to outlaw PROPELLER driven motors, gas, electric or other wise powered..
Lets not get complacent, thinking this CAN'T happen. The dogooders and sensitivity folks are getting more powerful.
THANK GOD FOR LIBERALS!AND REDNECKS....

Mr Jacobs, Thanks for what you have done for fishing in the Ozarks. We hope you continue having tournament in our area. I do have a question: What happened to Wal-mart?

I have been involved in the Kingfish Series, BFL, and Stren Series for the past few years and think that the tournament directors make my experience wonderful each tournament I am involved in. I understand that FLW cannot control a sponsors support but work hard to keep them involved in the organization. If they leave, find a new sponsor. Just keep our payouts going strong and continue doing what you do. I support the FLW and thank you for giving me a venue to better myself.

I left Bass and started fishing the stren last year and injoyed myself.I first got my knowledge of the FLW through Versus on direct TV and have been following ever sense. With direct TV losing versus,FLW also loses some of its following.I would like the see FLW sign with a better network so those who want to watch can.

I have chosen to fish with FLW Outdoors because of the courtious staff members, At every tournament that I have been to. Ron Lappin does an excellent job at reminding every angler that this is one big family, Also the fact that they pray together and offer chapel services for the anglers as well as thier family members. Also I agree with Walt about the family friendly logos, Lord knows these kids these days already have enough negative to look at. Whatever happens in the future is unknown, but I will tell you that if FLW maintains this type of character and morals I will continue to fish FLW for a long time to come.

Hello, I am a relatively new to the FLW outdoors. As a fan and fisherman I find alot of great information about the sport and enjoy what is being presented for the fan. Someday I may even enjoy being a participant in a tournament. Keep up the present path and I believe the organization will grow. Thanks Dave

I hope you keep the family friendly log policy in place i dropped out of Bass because of the sponsors they had and have supported FLW for years.
