FLW Tour season opener canceled
Rising, cold water causes overwhelming concern for anglers’ safety at Red River

FLW Tour
By Rob Newell -  10.Feb.2010
SHREVEPORT, La. – FLW Outdoors officially canceled the first FLW Tour event for 2010 on the Red River due to unsafe river conditions. The announcement came late Tuesday afternoon at the pre-tournament meeting.

The cancellation stemmed from a growing concern among pros who felt that the Red River was becoming more dangerous by the day with rising water levels, which were forecasted to continuing rising through Saturday.

The river was already high and rolling when anglers arrived for the event before the weekend. In fact, several of the popular ramps along the river were closed due to high water. And as the three-day practice period progressed, it continued to rise.

Increasingly, pros began to notice that structures and objects such as wing dams and buoy markers were slowly disappearing from view, hiding dangerously just under the water’s turbulent surface. Several pros reported actually hitting marker buoys that were totally submerged.

When more rain dumped on the Red River Basin on day three of practice, river levels continued to increase and current velocity reached the point where boats idling forward under power were actually drifting backwards.

Folgers pro Scott Suggs voiced concern that a boat having any kind of motor trouble within the vicinity of a lock and dam was doomed due to the sheer velocity of water going over the spillway.

“If you had an engine problem either coming to a lock or leaving one, it was going to be major trouble,” Suggs said. “A trolling motor is useless in that current. And even if an engine would just idle, it was not enough to escape the massive pull of that current towards those spillways.

“I left BASS because I respect FLW as an organization," Suggs continued. "After the decision yesterday, my respect for FLW shot out the roof. And it wasn’t because I wasn’t on fish. I was on fish. But it was a safety issue. The right call was made for everyone involved and I can’t say enough good things right now about this organization.”

Compounding the problem was that water temperatures were in the low 40s. Given the Red River’s remoteness, especially way south where many anglers were planning to run during the event, an inadvertent man overboard situation would become instantly life-threatening due to both the current, water temperature and the threat of hypothermia.

The upcoming forecast did not bode well for the event either. Increasing water levels would have submerged more dangerous objects and forecasted rain would have limited navigation visibility even more.

“Things were only going to get worse during the tournament,” said pro Chad Morgenthaler. “There were just too many dangerous factors coming together – it was a potential recipe for disaster.”

At the pre-tournament meeting Tuesday afternoon, pros verbalized their dire concern to Charlie Evans, FLW Outdoors President and CEO. Evans then conferred with other FLW officials for two hours before rendering a decision to cancel the event.

“This was a tough, tough decision,” said Evans. “After consulting with local authorities and FLW Outdoors staff members, we feel this was the best decision for the safety of the anglers. Unfortunately there is not a winning formula and we apologize for any hardships resulting from this decision. The weather in Shreveport has been a little cold, but the hospitality shown to our staff, partners and anglers has been very warm.”

The decision was received with a round of applause and general sense of relief among anglers.

Evans also made it clear that the Red River FLW Tour event would not be rescheduled or made up for in the 2010 schedule. Now the 2010 FLW Tour schedule will consist of the five remaining tournaments and the Forrest Wood Cup in Atlanta.

Also of note is that this is only the second time in the history of FLW Outdoors that a FLW Tour event has been cancelled. The first was the cancellation of the 2001 Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Champlain due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The next FLW Tour event will be held on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo., March 3-6.

There is NO way FLW officials make that call if a contigency of anglers don't cry wolf. The conditions were forecasted well in advance of the arrival of tournament officials and anglers. FLW could've made the call earlier or moved it to an "easier" location. It seems to me the river represented a challenge that a lot of anglers didn't feel they were up to. Very few anglers would fish the main channel anyway! Everyone keeps talking about what happens if they lose power to their big motor. If that many people are concerned about breaking down they need some better equipment! FLW = Soft

No problems! I'll be getting ready to watch the real tour & it's Classic next week. Wish the FLW luck, they are definitely going to need it!

How about the local fans...you wonder why FLW is not as popular as BASS...why not move the comp to one of the many area lakes....like Bass did. By the way this river has been fished under far worse conditions...its like driving on the road.. when the weather is bad..be carefull!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY Disappointed.

My thoughts on the cancellation of the Red River Tournament are that I am very disappointed that it was cancelled. I am a competitor. I came to compete to win. I practiced hard for three days. I had bites and I caught fish. I thought my chances to win or do well were very good.

But, I have fished professionally for approximately 19 years. I have seen tournament days cancelled because of inclement weather, mainly high winds, but I have never actually felt like I have ever been in a tournament where chances were as great for someone to lose his/her life as this one.

It was a combination of high, swift water, extremely cold tempeatures, and the fact that probably at least 100 of the field were going to lock through and run down a narrow, winding river channel with buoys pulled out of sight under water by the current. There were lots of floating as well as submerged debris. Although we "say" that safety is a priority, there is alot at stake and a lot of high adrenaline flowing. And, people take chances. I believe that FLW made a wise decision, that was tough, knowing that there would be lots of criticism. But think of the criticism that there would have been if someone would have lost his/her life. I realize that although the anglers (including myself), FLW, and the Shreveport, Bossier City community lost money, I truly believe that it was the only decision that could be made.
Sincerely, Darrel Robertson

Just wanted to let you all know that I applaud the tough decision that you all made concerning the Red River event. I know that from a financial stand point it was a very hard loss to swallow. However, on the positive side your actions spoke volumes about what kind of organization you are and that you really truly care about the safety and well-being of your anglers. This shows through not only for FLW Outdoors members but also for the entire bass fishing community. I know that these are very trying times for our sport and I am sure that it is not the way that you wanted to kick off 2010 but I think that in the long run, this decision will ultimately pay for itself because of the loyalty that you showed. Others will in turn show that same loyalty back! Please let your staff know that your actions have not gone unnoticed and that myself and other anglers look very forward to many great tournaments with your organization in the future.
Sincerely, Adam Lock

I wanted everyone at FLW Outdoors to know that they made the right decision at the Red River. I know that it cost a lot of money in expenses as it did for all the fishermen, but we can never overlook the safety of the fishermen. Thanks, Tom Mann, Jr.
