SALISBURY, N.C. — Ladd Whicker of Winston Salem, N.C., outpaced 183 competitors Saturday with five bass weighing 15 pounds, 11 ounces to win $5,660 and 200 points on the boater side of the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League (BFL) Carolina Division tournament on High Rock Lake.
Whicker used a worm and a jig in 10 to 14 feet of water to catch his winning stringer including the biggest bass in the Boater Division, which earned him an additional $915.
Dennis Caudle won the co-angler Big Bass Award of $455 with a bass that he caught on a Carolina-rigged lizard.
Boater David Wright of Lexington, N.C., won $500 as the highest finishing participant in the Ranger Cup incentive program. He finished in second place.
The Wal-Mart BFL will visit Lake Wylie Sept. 29-30 for a two-day Super Tournament that will determine the Divisional Points Champion who will be awarded $1,000. The co-angler with the most points by the conclusion of the season ending tournament will receive $500.
The top 30 boaters and top 30 co-anglers in the Carolina Division will advance to regional competition Oct. 9-13 on Weiss Lake near Cedar Bluff, Ala., where they will go up against top competitors from the Ozark, Choo Choo and Illini divisions for a shot at qualifying for the $250,000 All-American.
Awards for the 2001 BFL season could reach $5.7 million based on full fields at each tournament.
