Hometown angler wins on Lake Okeechobee
CLEWISTON, Fla. — Gregory MacLean of Okeechobee, Fla., won $4,944 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points Saturday on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail's Gator Division event on Lake Okeechobee.
MacLean caught five largemouth bass weighing 26 pounds, 4 ounces during the one-day event by flipping a black and blue jig to weed beds along the north shore.
Raymond Watson of Cypress Gardens, Fla., won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $740 with a 7-pound, 13-ounce bass that he caught using Berkley Power Bait lures. Watson also won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures.
First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,472 went to Larry Collins of Miami, Fla., who caught five largemouth bass weighing 19-10 by using a black and blue plastic crawfish in weeds along the north shore.
Kirk Samples of Naples, Fla., won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $370 with a 7-pound largemouth he caught on a jerkbait along the north shore.
Overall, 766 bass weighing 1,717 pounds, 8 ounces were caught, including 89 five bass limits.
The Red Man Tournament Trail will return to Roland Martin's marina on Lake Okeechobee Oct. 7-8 for the division's two-day Super Tournament. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the event will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.
