Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi achieved what had been considered by many to be an impossible goal here Sunday in bass fishing’s richest championship tournament. After disqualification from the season-opening Walmart FLW Tour event on Lake Okeechobee because of an inadvertent rules infraction, the South Carolina angler completed a five-tournament comeback in regular season to qualify for the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup. Finally, here before a standing-room-only crowd in Colonial Life Arena, Gagliardi capped off his comeback by winning the four-day test on Lake Murray, his home fishery. Gagliardi’s four-day weight of 51 pounds, 2 ounces earned him $500,000 For the complete story of Gagliardi’s championship victory, click here. Visit ForrestWoodCup.com for complete results. Here’s how the rest of the top 10 earned their share of the $1.2 million tournament purse.

How much is enough? For Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi, it was an ounce. That’s what it took to edge Straight Talk pro Scott Canterbury and win the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart and hosted by Capital City/Lake Murray Country with 51 pounds, 2 ounces. Gagliardi hoisted the Cup before a packed house at Colonial Life Arena. Details on top finishers will follow, but here’s the upshot: Just 11 ounces separated first and fifth places. For fans of this sport, a weigh-in like this delivers memories not soon forgotten. Safe to say, that sentiment runs a good bit deeper for the local favorite from Prosperity, S.C. “It just falls in line with everything else that happened this year,” he says. “I made it into the (Cup) by one ounce. It’s just fitting.”

“I’ve often said there are a lot more good people than bad people. The bad ones just get all the publicity. We wanted to give attention to a good one,” said Forrest L. Wood, the namesake of the Forrest L. Wood Sportsmanship and Community Leadership Award, as he helped honor this year’s award recipient, Rich Dalbey, on stage before the day-two weigh-in at the Forrest Wood Cup. The annual award recognizes a Walmart FLW Tour pro who exemplifies ideals of sportsmanship and community leadership. Dalbey, who just completed his second year on Tour as a professional angler, was selected in part based on the task he took on of coordinating food drives at every FLW Tour stop.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – When Bryan New left the dock at Dreher Island State Park this morning, he could hardly control his excitement. Before him lay an opportunity, and it was an opportunity he believed he could seize. After catching 7 pounds, 9 ounces on day one of the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Murray, New came into today’s competition atop the co-angler leaderboard by more than 2 pounds. All he needed to do was catch a couple of solid fish and he’d have a shot at the win. Three keepers would almost certainly seal the deal. After two consecutive top-five finishes at the Forrest Wood Cup, this was New’s best shot at the title. And he went out and earned it.

Suffice it to say that Philip Jarabeck has admired the accomplishments of his uncle, Castrol pro David Dudley, but today he showed there’s plenty of talent in the family by taking over the lead Dudley set on day one of the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart and hosted by Capital City/Lake Murray Country. Dudley, a past Forrest Wood Cup champion, posted the event’s heaviest sack with his first-round weight of 17 pounds, 14 ounces. Today, Jarabeck hauled in 17 pounds and raced up the standings from his 19th-place finish on day one. “I was just super-blessed today,” Jarabeck says. “I had a great day today. I culled three or four times. I had multiple keepers that I threw back.”

Lake Murray, known as the “Jewel of South Carolina,” is glimmering brightly under the hot August sun today during the second day of competition at the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup. Weather.com currently lists the air temperature in Columbia, S.C., as 88 degrees, but the humidity and nearly flat-calm conditions are making the “feels like” temperature seem much higher. FLW’s On the Water crew has reported only a handful of limits and just as few kicker bites thus far. Most of the action occurred early in the morning. Once the sun rose above the treetops, the eat switch flipped to the off position.

Few will disagree that qualifying for the Forrest Wood Cup by way of the Walmart Bass Fishing League is among the most difficult challenges in competitive bass fishing. The journey to the Cup through the BFLs is one requiring immense skill and flawless execution over the course of five regular-season circuit events, a 160-boat regional and a three-day championship against the best weekend warriors on the planet.

Shallow or deep? That was the No. 1 question posed by pros and pundits alike going into the Forrest Wood Cup at Lake Murray, and after one day of competition, weigh-in results and observation suggest that the answer might to be “both.” Shallow and deep patterns played a part in top bags from day one, and at this point it would be difficult to say which fish will be the key to victory.

In the field of 45 pros hoping to raise the trophy at the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart and hosted by Capital City/Lake Murray Country, five have enjoyed that magical moment before. After a strong day-one performance, Castrol pro David Dudley is looking a lot like a man on a mission for No. 2.

The Forrest Wood Cup is the biggest tournament in bass fishing, and you’ve likely heard a lot of chatter about the anglers in the field, the fishing techniques and all the events that surround the tournament. But how much do you know about Lake Murray itself? We got into town early, and, rather than work, we decided to head out on the water for a tour of the lake. Here’s what we found.

It says a lot about the growth of fishing and the fishing tackle industry that the first national fishing tackle show was held in the ballroom of Chicago’s Sherman House Hotel in 1958. And it wasn’t a very big ballroom. In fact, a few of the exhibitors simply rented nearby suites and showed their wares there. About 20 of the 30-some-odd companies that exhibited in that first show – then called the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association Fishing Tackle Trade Show – still exist, and their names resonate in the fishing world: Zebco, Bagley, Frabill, Plano, Berkley, PRADCO, South Bend, Wright & McGill and Yakima Bait Company among them.

With a name like DieZel, I expected the MinnowZ from Z-Man to be one rough customer. What I didn’t expect was something tough enough to catch several dozen bass and still not need replacing. Then I remembered the nifty 4-inch swimbait is manufactured using ElaZtech, a super-soft, yet incredibly strong material that has made a name for itself as one of the most pliable and durable soft plastics used in the fresh- and saltwater fishing industries.

Here we go again. For the second year in a row, Dayton, Tenn., pro Andy Morgan carries the Walmart FLW Tour Kellogg’s Angler of the Year lead into the final event of the season. And once again, the final event is being held on the Tennessee River, this time on Kentucky Lake. Morgan seems relaxed as ever, with his nonchalant, down-home attitude overpowering any pressure he might be feeling. He’s also an expert at dodging inquiries about the AOY race when questioned about it in public. We were able to catch up with him finally, however, and we fired questions at him about the AOY, his place in bass-fishing history and, much to his delight, turkey hunting. Here is our version of 20 questions (OK, it’s actually 24 questions) with Andy Morgan.

More than 175 anglers began the 2014 Walmart FLW Tour season with hopes and dreams of making it to the Forrest Wood Cup. Only 35 of them will, and with just one tournament to go, on Kentucky Lake, a handful of pros within striking distance of 35th place will have to kick it into high gear if they want to be part of the show at Lake Murray August 14-17. They’re trying to replace those pros who are already above the cut line, but with too small a cushion to rest easily. This latter group is composed of the “bubble boys” – the anglers teetering dangerously close to the line separating in and out. And of course, the prospects of the 2014 standouts at the top of the list are unofficially sealed. Barring major catastrophe, they’ll finish with enough points. The goal of a handful of these fortunate few at Kentucky Lake is to try to run down and overtake current AOY leader Andy Morgan. All this considered, we decided to take a look at some of the pros currently sitting within 10 spots of 35th place in the AOY standings, and weigh their odds of making it to the Cup.

Big sacks on days one and two pace Missouri boater's BFL All-American win
FLORENCE, Ala. – Current positions bass – everyone knows that. Just where today’s Wilson Lake current positioned the massive school of bass he fished on days one and two – Marcus Sykora does not know that. What he does know: the 53 pounds, 15 ounces he tallied those first two days positioned him for a wire-to-wire victory in the Walmart BFL All-American.

Cothran tops co-angler field in BFL All-American
FLORENCE, Ala. – To say that Marcus Sykora is leading the Walmart BFL All-American on Wilson Lake is tantamount to calling Michelangelo a church painter, or terming Noah just a boat builder. Without question, the seasoned angler from of Osage Beach, Mo. is on something really special and his performance thus far has been nothing short of complete dominance.

BFL All-American field must manage location and the clock
FLORENCE, Ala. – Fishing tournaments inherently rely on timed competition – get as much weight as you can within the allotted time frame. However, as the country's top 49 boaters and co-anglers take to Wilson Lake for the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy timing will greatly impact outcomes.

You’ve heard them before, as you watched an FLW tournament weigh-in being streamed on the website – anglers invited by a weighmaster to say something to loved ones back home. If they’re not too nervous, most anglers who are asked take advantage of the opportunity. Almost invariably, they look into the camera’s lens, and the first words they utter go something like this: “I want to say hello to my wife and thank her for her support all these years. I wouldn’t be here without her.” Mike Gabel would give just about anything to be able to say that, knowing that his wife, Richay, was out there watching and listening. The last time he spoke of her, at a Walmart Bass Fishing League weigh-in, he also spoke of his wife’s battle with brain cancer, and how a surgeon had removed a malignant tumor two years previously and that Richay was finally going to get better. Except she didn’t, or at least not for long. In early January of this year Richay succumbed to pneumonia after being stricken with another brain tumor that wasn’t operable.

Finding the right angle for ledge bass
The best part of the ledge-fishing season is when bass first move out in late spring and early summer. The fish aren’t pressured too much yet so they’re not hugging the bottom and they’re more aggressive. When I find fish on a ledge, the first thing I’ll do is move to the outside and cast a crankbait in over the fish.

Life was good for Milner until 2013, but then it got great. He won the Walmart Bass Fishing League All-American championship on Tennessee’s Lake Nickajack and earned $100,000 for first place, plus a Ranger Cup contingency award of $20,000. The Arkie Division angler also locked up an automatic berth in the 2013 Forrest Wood Cup, and that’s where his luck kicked into high gear.
