Tharp worked his way up the FLW circuit ranks and started fishing the FLW Tour in 2009. He has qualified for several Forrest Wood Cups, including a career-high runner-up finish in 2011. He cites Lake Okeechobee as his favorite body of water and scored a victory there in a 2012 FLW Tour Open event. Tharp is well-known for always having a flipping stick in his hand.
Tharp is married to wife Sara. They travel the Tour with their two beagles Cooper and Riley. One of his most memorable moments on Tour was at his 2011 Forrest Wood Cup appearance. When he is not fishing fresh water tournaments he is saltwater fishing. If he were not a professional angler he says he would be a professional corn-hole player.
